This lamp bears the etching "UNIS FRANCE" and "Métal" and two small numbers below the circular label. Contrary to popular belief, “UNIS” is not the name of a manufacturer. This is a French quality label that appeared on a wide range of products during the 1900s. These products range from dolls to mechanical slide rules. “UNIS” is an acronym for Union Nationale InterSyndicale and the name was registered in 1916. The name was placed on merchandise to emphasize quality and the trademark was used by a syndicate of various manufacturers in different industries18. The true manufacturer's name can be found in the center of the elliptical mark, in this case the manufacturer's name is Métal. Two digits typically accompany this label and are usually found below or center and to the left and right of the ellipse. In this instance two numbers are present: "1" & "5". It is believed the number on the left ("1") represents the type of product (incandescent lamp in this instance), while the number on the right ("5") probably represents a sub-product code.
