The Reliance name can be found on medium based decorative lamps imported from Austria and Japan and is also a name associated with vintage Christmas lighting. Reliance was an importer of decorative electric lamps based in New York1. One particular style of lamp the company sold and imported from Japan is the star shown above. Such lamps were marketed under the "Kristal Star" name and were sold for a few years during the 1930s. The design for this star was patented on February 26th, 1936 by Elmer J. Graf and assigned to the G.B.G. Corporation of New Jersey (US Patent No. 2,031,642). This lamp has a "diamond H" marking on the underside, probably identifying the Japanese manufacturer. This mark can often be found on similar Christmas lamps from this era imported from Japan. |
