Early Edison lamps. Caption card reads: “1880: A carbonized bamboo (Japanese “Madake”) filament was successfully developed by Edison. This material proved to be so efficient that it continued in use until 1890. Larger lamps continued to use bamboo filaments until 1905. Only Edison bases and filament supports were changed. These lamps utilized brass strips as conductors. The filaments are held by platinum clamps. Some demonstrate the later copper plating technique. (Light output 1.2 lumens per watt)” |
