Another reader has commented that this item appears to be a pre-1900 voltage regulator, possibly for a DC generator. The mechanism on the left-hand side of the unit acts as a motor driven rheostat. The mechanism to the right is a voltage sensitive relay that controls the drive for the rheostat. Thanks to Tim Hughes for sharing this information. |
