Sounds like the dropping resistor in the base burned up! Your bulb was probably repaired with a low wattage carbon resistor.
See patent #2,421,571 on this website, or mine for more information. You may be able to fix the bulb again if the glass globe wasn't damaged. You will need a wirewound resistor of about 1000 ohms according to information in the patent.
These bulbs are over 50 years old and it's amazing there are still ones to be found.
