Picture of the month
« on: February 03, 2005, 04:12:29 pm »

This early labor photograph is entitled "The Glass Worker" from the Miniature Incandescent Lamp Corporation.
-circa 1915-

What exactly is "The Glass Worker" doing?  Is he crushing glass in that barrel?

Hey Phillip,

Good question!  I can only guess that he is crushing used glass in an effort to recycle it for the manufacture of incandescent lamps.  Unfortunately the photograph did not come with any further information, only what I posted in the caption.

He is crushing the scrap. It is normal practise but it is not for recycling but to catalyse the melting of a new batch of raw materials. Without some glass added to the sand/soda mix it requires a lot more heat to make molten glass.

Phillip- I bought the photo off from eBay back in 2002.? It looks great framed on the wall near the bulb collection!

Frank- thanks for the additional information.
