Title: New Collector
Post by: unknownlight on January 20, 2003, 11:46:00 am
Hiya,
I recently found a collection of antique bulbs in my loft, which had been passed down to me through generations without my knowledge. I never realised how interested I was in these bulbs until this moment came. From then on I have been collecting such bulbs and i really want to know, which types are the best, and rarest. I took these bulbs to an auctioneer specialist and they told me that they were worth a few bob, and if i carry on collecting and completing my collection, I could earn thousands. It was not the money which interested me, however. Simply the fact of how they work and how beautiful some of them are is what interests me most. If anyone else out there like-minded as me could help me out, I would be ever greatful.
Dearest Regards,
Martha

Martha,

Welcome to wide world of bulb collecting!  I would begin collecting the type of bulbs that interest you the most and maybe focus on rarity after you develop a greater knowledge of the hobby.  At that time you may begin to develop greater interests in certain types of bulbs.  For example you may become more interested in antique Christmas lamps - just one of the many niches in antique light bulb collecting.  Some people only concentrate on bulbs with exhaust tips while others may develop an interest in vintage discharge lamps.  We can't tell you the types of bulbs "are the best" since this is a personal decision that you must make.  Once you have found your collecting niche you can then dive in and learn more about the history of these items and you'll begin to learn why certain items are scarcer than others.  For me, learning the history behind the items I collect is just as fun as collecting the items themselves.

Happy collecting!
