We are helping a widdowed friend to move house and have found 3 Phillips SL-25 , white-based bulbs in good working order. They have glass outers. Can anyone say what they are used for and do they have any value? It seems a shame to just throw them away!

AFAIK these lamps are still produced today and therefore of little value to collectors, unlike the older grey based lamps which are sought after.
These lamps were an early replacement for incandescent lamps and are rather bulky and heavy compared to more modern types.
They may used almost anywhere that you would otherwise use an incandescent lamp, provided that no dimmer is installed.
It would be a waste to discard them, I would simply use them in your own home in place of 100 watt incandescent lamps, especialy in lights that are used a lot.
