Title: H.W. McCandless company?
Post by: Tim on June 30, 2008, 11:11:41 am
H.W. McCandless manufactured miniature incandescent lamps during the early 1900s and is probably most famous for producing Lee DeForest?s three element Audion vacuum tube.  In 1914 McCandless was taken over my Westinghouse.  Although the association between McCandless and DeForest is well documented from 1905 through 1914, there seems to be little documented history left of McCandless and his beginnings in the miniature incandescent lamp business.  One source found suggests H.W. McCandless started in the lamp business in 1895 after acquiring the assets of Herman Jaeger?s miniature lamp plant.  I?m interested in seeing more documented information and history concerning McCandless.  Please share your photos and information regarding McCandless here as well as any pictures from your collection of lamps known to have been made by McCandless.  Such lamps may have the stamping ?EMPIRE N.Y.? on the base.
