Title: Light bulb database
Post by: Amptiques on July 30, 2004, 07:51:00 am

Hi all

I am a new kid on this block.......but has anyone before suggested starting a database with a photo, description, manufacturer, approx date of manufacturer etc of light bulbs?

It could be done in such a way that members could access and update data with their own specialised knowledge and it could come in useful for collectors. A "prices people pay" might be handy for us novices and maybe a updating count of how many of each bulb is known to exist in collections.

Nice idea but there are so many varieties of bulbs to collect that it could be a daunting task.  Getting all collectors to cooperate and participate would be hard too.  I?d like to hear more input on the idea though ? anyone?

I?ve been toying with this idea and may implement a ?past auctions? bulb database sometime in the future.  It will probably be a subscription based service (for a very small nominal fee) which would go directly to covering the cost (hosting fees) of this web site.  There are many details to work out yet but I feel other collectors might benefit from such a service.

I started a bulb database a long while ago. It is made up entirely of past ebay items. It can be found at my site:

http://bulbs.2yr.net/bulbdb.shtml (http://bulbs.2yr.net/bulbdb.shtml)

The galleries also have useful info about each bulb:

Now that I have a new digital camera, I'll be able to add lots more bulbs. I still have hundreds of bulbs to photograph, so at best I may add them later this year.

I've tried things like this before (inviting visitors to help with the site), and I know for a fact that it doesn't work. Especially in such a small community like this.

I strongly believe that if a collectible lightbulb database is to be made, that it should be easy to read and understand for non-collectors, otherwise its popularity will never rise. But still, I wouldn't expect it to rise that much anyway, as the general public's interest in collectible lightbulbs is very very low compared with other collectibles.
