It may not be a lot, but when you have a three or four bulb heater, it adds up.

1000W.  That seems like alot.  Especially in those days.

It was alot in those days, even though today's standard is 1500 watts, but really the only thing electric heat was used for was an area where a kerosene heater or heat producing kerosene lamp (such as an aladdin lamp), or even a coal or wood burning stove was not desirable or there was not enough space, such as a bathroom or cellar.
