Title: Help with bulbs for old table lamp c.1910
Post by: GuyWood on September 06, 2002, 04:49:00 pm
I have recently acquired a cast metal lamp which has three threaded bulb sockets.  These sockets are about one eighth of an inch larger than the candelabra size.  Is anyone familiar with this size? Is it possible to get replacement bulbs or must one replace the sockets?  This would be easier said than done as they are set into the sculpture.  Thanks for any help.

Do you know the country of origin of this lamp? The sockets you describe sound like European types, known here as "Small Edison Screw" or "SES", technical term E14. In comparison, North American Candelabra-bases are E12.

I`m not sure if 120 volt SES-based lamps are made, but I see no reason why not. Try http://bulbs.com (http://bulbs.com)  or http://topbulb.com (http://topbulb.com)  - those guys supply all sorts of lamps and might be able to find suitable bulbs for your lamp. Alternatively you can buy European 220 volt lamps from an online dealer ovfer here (Google should be able to find someone who`ll ship overseas to you) and use a step-up transformer (Radio Shack?)- but only if the fixture was originally designed to work at such voltges, otherwise the insulatonh may be a little weak and not suited to the higher voltages.

Hope this helps.

could be intermediate within that size range also.  Go to Home Depot an try one of that size lamp.  Might work.

Here is why I think this based upon the specs:
E12/15 = Candelabra Screw  ?" (0.47") Dia. 0.65" Long Base (LCL is at Bot of Base contact.)

E14 = European Screw 0.540" Dia. 0.85" Long Base.  Sym. to E-12, but larger & Longer.

E17/20 = Intermediate Screw 5/8" (0.642") (17mm) Dia. 0.82" Long Base (LCL is at Bot of Base contact.)
