Title: Strange Philips bulb - what was it used for???

Looking for more info on this strange one. It's made by Philips and coated silver except for a flat spot where the filament is visible. I'm guessing some kind of spot or projector lamp?

I'd say you can't be far off on that one Tim.
That bulb is definitely for something with a closely controlled light beam. But......that's only my guess!

I think this is a specially designed theatre/stage/studio light bulb. I believe Philips still makes this one, but have not checked my current lamp catalog so I can't be sure. Still, this is a neat and interesting lamp.

The base looks exactly like the base of the bulb in my old 8mm movie projector-though the bulb looks different itself. I'm guessing some sort of projector bulb.

That 8V 50W lamp is designed for an 8mm home movie projector and was very popular in Europe at one time.  It is better known as a CXR or A1/17 bulb, or Philips type 13113C/04.  It is probably the most optically advanced bulb that has ever been made, becuse its rear ellipsoidal reflector and hemispherical front mirror produces a very narrow beam with almost no light loss.  The chimney on the top ensures that the bulb doesn't blacken as it ages becuase nearly all the evaporated tungsten rises upwards and is deposited here.

The lamp is still available from Philips in Europe but they don't actually make it themselves any more.  The last company making these is Fuji lampworks in Japan and they supply it to GE, Philips and Sylvania.  Your lamp looks like it would have been made by Philips Holland or Belgium around 1970.

If any of you would like one of these bulbs let me know, I have 4 spares which were made by Thorn Lighting in the UK in the 1960's.

Hi,
If anyone`s interested....
There`s currently a lot of 3 of these 8v/50w bulbs going through EBAY, made by Toshiba. Not sure that they`re that old but if anyone`s interested, they`re there until August 5th.
