Hi group - I thought I would share a bulb that I've held onto for 32
years now. It is one of two I found in an attic (the other a tungsten
cage filament) of a house a buddy and I rented. As we snooped around the
attic, I flipped the light switch on, saw the special looking filaments
and was drawn to them. Of course I unscrewed them to keep, replacing
them with your cheap standard bulbs.
Now that I have collected a good number of various bulbs, this one
still has me confused. It has the unsupported looped type carbon filament, anchored with
carbon paste to the lead- in wires.
On the top is a faint marking saying: quality service, but the rating
is still listed in candle power -16CP, not watts.
I guess, comparing to other bulbs I have or read about, this seems like
a very early bulb to be tipless. Any ideas?

Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. I can't comment on this bulb's age but I would like to point out that Nalco was famous for making carbon filament bulbs similar in appearance to your bulb. They also rated their bulbs in terms of candle power and continued on this way until at least the 1950s or 1960s from what I have been able to tell. I have a box of misc. carbon bulbs here with all different brand names, similar in appearance to your bulb. I can snap some pictures of them if they are of interest...

I have an identical bulb, also marked with 'quality service'. I got it for free when I bought my carbon HYLO bulb. These "quality service" bulbs came in at least 2 different sizes.
You can tell whether a tipless bulb is early or not by looking at the lead-in wires. If they are made of platinum then it most likely is a genuine early tipless bulb. But as far as I know, quality service bulbs aren't among early tipless bulbs.

Given the fact that it is one that I found so long ago and kind of started my interest in bulbs, I like it no matter how old it is!
