DURO-TEST colored bulbs?
« on: December 30, 2006, 04:56:50 pm »
Found two of these in a shop one town over, however only one lights. Both are green, rated at 120/125V, 8.5W. There's two additional things stamped on the base. One reads "D.T.", the other one reads "73" This makes me assume that these particular lamps may have been made in 1973?

Looks like a Flamescent lamp.  They have an unusual coating wrapped around the bulb to diffuse light ? an odd Duro-Test design.  They came in other colors too: blue, red, yellow, gold, and clear.  They were also made in larger bulbs and bases.  They are listed in a 1984 Duro-Test catalog that I have but I don?t know how many years they were made.

ahh. I like these little bulbs as they cast a non-blinding, soft glow. I keep the working one lit in a christmas candlestick here on my desk, to the left of my monitor.

UPDATE: Lamp died a couple of weeks ago to a fall off my desk. The bulb is intact but the filament is broken. :(

Apparently they are still being made.? From the Duro-Test website:

Flamescent?
Simulating the flame-like appeal of a true gaslight, Duro-Test Flamescent? lamps are elegantly finished in a fine-spun fiberglass. These unique lamps are ideal for chandeliers, coach lights, and post lamps and are available in both candelabra or medium bases. Available in natural or pink finishes.

What I don't get is how come they stopped making the other colors? I wonder if the demand for them just went down
