Title: Got Some Lamps For Christmas.... one is odd!
Post by: Nick D. on December 30, 2010, 11:15:14 pm
LOL... title has been edited! I realized that "Got Some Christmas Lamps" was unintentionally misleading.... xD

Got a few typical bulbs for Christmas except for one... a 'cobalt-ish' tipped carbon lamp with what I like to call a "vortex" filament. I've seen it used in North American (NALCO) bulbs but it seems to bear no resemblance to their lamps.

The glass color is lighter on the bottom (base) half of the bulb and the tip is uncolored.
Most interestingly (at least to me) is that the bottom of the threads have a Nov. 8, 1904 patent date stamped in them. I would try to search for the patent but since Google revised their patent search engine, it's !&#@ impossible!

Dont miss the 'ears' on the support stem.

This bulb runs super hot (even for a carbon) and was definitely not designed for decorative use!

There is a patent search at USPTO.gov where you should be able to find the patent #.

It looks to be a carbon heat therapy lamp with a tinted blue glass, they usually run at about 240 to 260 watts. they are common in clear glass but i've never seen a tinited one, so it might be worth more than the normal $10.00 for a clear one.

Hi, Nick.... I should have since updated this thread but I have not been visiting in a long time.

The bulb is not for heat therapy, but for laboratory use. Its glass is similar to Wood's Glass, but I don't have a spectrometer to find out exactly what it's putting out.

It definately would not put off much uv radiation, but a lot on the infrared. The people using it would most likely have been trying to use the heat for something, while trying to minimize its light output by using something like woods glass, although woods glass is notoriously suceptible to thermal shock, so it may not even be woods glass.

It was suggested to me by experienced collectors that the bulb is most likely by Stereopticon, which made bulbs for scientific purposes.
