What sort of Bulb is this ?

I have come across a lamp with an unusual bulb in it

That doesn`t look like a "bulb" to me. Reckon it`s actually a heater - or at least - was. There look to be marks on the upper greeen ceramic portion where an insulated heating element would have been coiled around, and connected to the screws at the bottom. Such things would have normally been used screwed into a fixture with a parabolic metal reflector to direct the heat where needed. An interesting curio but probably no longer functional.

That is absolutely right. It is a heating lamp. 30 Years ago you could still buy them in Austria in old fashioned stockists of electrical material. They had a E27 base and ratings from 200 upp to 1.000 watts. I have one in use in my workshop in the basement in winter. The effect is like in front of a fireplace. They are banned since the spiral wire is not insulated. Neither was the whole heating lamp. Mine is earthed. This kind of heating device also existed in the U.S. I have an old one for 120 Volts "Sunbowl" I bought long ago and I rewired it to work on my 200v mains.
