Title: LEDs Take Over !
Post by: Ross on November 11, 2003, 10:52:00 am
Happened to wander in to a Habitat store yesterday (don't know if they have a U.S. presence - it is a bit like a high street version of Ikea) and was surprised to find that they are selling a large range of really rather good, bright, LED Christmas Light sets.  Even more surprising is that sets consisting of 32 white or blue LEDs (set inside translucent plastic heart, cube and bottle shapes) were only ?15.  This is still very expensive when compared to incandescent lights, but even so, replacement lamps should not be an issue for a while.  Even more impressive was the power consumption at only 1.92 Watts !  I must confess that I did invest in one set - the other remarkable thing is how long the LEDs remain dimly lit after the mains supply is turned off - must be a decent capacitor in the plug top PSU !   I realise that I am away from the topic of antique lighting here, but if LEDs do start to edge out incandescent Christmas lights, I suppose their rarity value will increase.
