The electrodes are really precisely the same, as you described in your question. Two plates on the sides and tripple coiled electrode and wire around.

Hi Stan,

Thanks a lot for looking. I also found in litterature that GE used probed electrodes although the difference with Sylvania is that GE's probes are made metal foils instead of wires. Interestingly, GE's design has the advantage of incidentally providing electrode shields like those found in Philips fluorescent tubes, which decreases the electrode fall voltage and limit the end-blackening throughout the lamp's life.

I hate to introduce any commercialism into the forum, but since you are having a problem finding these lamps...I own an electrical distributorship in Brooklyn NY.  We have 39pcs of a new GE# F48PG17/CW 4' POWERGROOVE lamp.  They come packed 12/case.  I have two complete cases(one with the box cover ripped open) and the rest are loose.  E-mail me at jlifton@lbelectric.com if you are interested.
