Hi all,
Pictured below is a recent addition to the bulb collection here. The bulb is tipless and is marked ?Seel Patents? on the top where the tip normally is. The plaster filled base is very short and identical to those used on ca.1884 Edison bulbs. The last two pictures are base comparisons of an 1884 Edison and the Seel bulb
? identical looking! The filament is a typical ?U? shape but has two carbon paste weld joints on the platinum lead-in wires. There is no glass stem but rather two glass pipes protruding from the base which form a round pinch that supports each leg of the filament. Information that I have tells me that Carl Seel patented a process for producing a homogeneous silk filament in 1886. If anyone can supply some information regarding Seel then please share. I am really curious to know why the base on the Seel bulb is identical to Edison?s short screw base ? a blatant copy or was there a connection between the two in some way?
