Lost a Sylvania Fluorescent yesterday :(
« on: December 20, 2009, 01:52:31 am »
Put my C7 strands on the tree yesterday, and installed my fluorescents (14, just got 4 more). Got some pics of the tree, left the room, and heard BZZZZZZZZZZZZZT! Found one of the coral bulbs had passed (the globe was siliconed to the base, obviously had a hard life!). What a stink! Took a couple hours before the smell was gone.

At least it wasn't my only blue bulb :)

Sounds like the dropping resistor in the base burned up! Your bulb was probably repaired with a low wattage carbon resistor.
See patent #2,421,571 on this website, or mine for more information. You may be able to fix the bulb again if the glass globe wasn't damaged. You will need a wirewound resistor of about 1000 ohms according to information in the patent.
These bulbs are over 50 years old and it's amazing there are still ones to be found.

An electrical thing about which I am curious is ...
Why do I hear that the Sylvania fluorescent bulbs are not to be used with a DIMMER??

Curiously,
