Title: Byllesby-Lange lamp bases & sockets
Post by: Tim on November 29, 2000, 06:05:00 pm
Does anyone out there have any information on Byllesby-Lange lamp bases and sockets, such as when they were manufactured and what incandescent lamp manufacturers they were exclusive to, etc.? Was there a relationship between Byllesby-Lange and Sawyer-Man / Westinghouse? The base designs seem almost identical. I may have found a Byllesby-Lange type socket but I have no idea how to tell it from a normal Sawyer-Man / Westinghouse socket. Anyone have a Byllesby-Lange socket picture that I could compare to?

Thanx in advance

Tim, perhaps the following might help.
I have xerox copies of three patents:
1) No. 366,606, filed Nov. 18, 1886, granted Jul 12, 1887. Issued to Frank L. Pope, Henry M. Byllesby and Philip Lange, for a key socket. Assignors to Geo. Westinghouse, Jr.
2) No. 383,616, filed Sep. 1, 1887, granted May 29, 1888. Issued to Byllesby and Lange, for a lamp (with the bulbous Westinghouse end pin). Assignors to Westinghouse Elec. Co.
3) No. 434,153, filed Oct. 31, 1888. Issued to Lange on Aug. 12, 1890 for a socket. Assignor to Westinghouse Elec. Co. I can scan the sockets if you think it might help.

Hi Tim, I have pictured my B/L Socket and lamp photo. The only difference i know is that the B/L Lamp will not fit into a regular Westinghouse Socket. The pin on the bottom of the B/L is more shaped like a inverted bowling pin and the socket requires a larger diameter based hole in bottom of the socket. The hole in the vottom of the B/L Socket is a square type shaped hole as the Westinghouse appears to be round in shape.Picture is not so great but you might get the idea.

Tim, perhaps the following three images will supplement Jerry's picture. The files are really too large (71K, 90K and 88K) to download rapidly so if it takes too long to view feel free to delete this message.

Thanks for the help guys - much appreciated.

Ed, your images load up pretty quick on my slow connection - the patent info is really interesting. The socket I have seems to be a partial piece that exludes the shell and switch mechanism. What I have is identical in apperance to Fig.5 in the second scan, mounted to an 1/8" right angle bracket made of brass with several thin mica discs that insulate it from the bracket. I'll post a picture when I have more time.

The first patent scan suggest the entire lamp was produced by B/L rather than just the base design as I originally thought - is this a good assumption?

Thanx again!
