An (Elusive?) NE-1 Glow Lamp
« on: November 06, 2008, 11:33:27 pm »
I love glow lamps and have a lot of them -- but I've never seen an NE-1 until today.  None of my literature mentions it, all the catalogs I have start with NE-2.  It has a candelabra base, the envelope is a G-5.75 (23/32"), and the electrodes are a pair of thin spiral copper wires, passing through a white glass bead.  Here is a picture lit; another will follow.  I lit it through a 100K ohm resistor and it fired at the usual 68 volts or so.  This is at about 80; it gets brighter at 120 and did not arc even at 140.

The W on it means Westinghouse.  Curiously for an American glow lamp with a screw base, there is no resistor built in and I suspect the convention of putting screw bases on internally ballasted glow lamps came after this type was manufactured.  Does anyone have any literature on the NE-1, especially giving a likely date?

I did find plenty of references to NE-1 on Google -- but they were all callouts in parts lists or schematics (R-1, R-2, NE-1, etc.) and not references to this lamp type.

Very nice lamp Chris!  Thanks for sharing the pictures.  This is the first one I have ever seen (or heard of).

<jealous> It's so cute!  I want one! </jealous>

May I echo Tim's sentiments and thank you for sharing pictures of such a rare item.
