Title: Early Seel Patents Light Bulb
Post by: Tim on September 07, 2003, 09:05:00 pm
Hi all,

Pictured below is a recent addition to the bulb collection here.  The bulb is tipless and is marked ?Seel Patents? on the top where the tip normally is.  The plaster filled base is very short and identical to those used on ca.1884 Edison bulbs.  The last two pictures are base comparisons of an 1884 Edison
and the Seel bulb
? identical looking!  The filament is a typical ?U? shape but has two carbon paste weld joints on the platinum lead-in wires.  There is no glass stem but rather two glass pipes protruding from the base which form a round pinch that supports each leg of the filament.  Information that I have tells me that Carl Seel patented a process for producing a homogeneous silk filament in 1886.  If anyone can supply some information regarding Seel then please share.  I am really curious to know why the base on the Seel bulb is identical to Edison?s short screw base ? a blatant copy or was there a connection between the two in some way?

Nice lamp, Tim. Offhand I can't help. If someone is able to go to a patent depository perhaps some "light" can be shed on this lamp. The only Seel lamp I can recall is one on my website, mentioned in the topic dealing with comments about lamps in the Hammer Collection.

The patent mentioned above is:

Kaiserliches Patentamt [Imperial Patent Office] No. 39464, Class 21, May 5th, 1886

I visited the German patent web site last year but had no luck researching patents this old online.

The Seel lamp filament was also mentioned in the June 8th 1888 issue of The Electrician which I haven't been able to locate...

Speaking of patents...

After reading this topic, I went to the US patent office's website. I didn't know one could view patents online, much less patents from the 19th century! So I went and tried to find Edison's patent for his lightbulb. I had to search through hundreds of patents before finding Edison's because I could not find the patent number on any web site, so I had to do a tough search. Finally I came upon patent 223898, and I smiled. Here it is, take it as a free gift from me! Wouldn't it look nice framed and placed near your lightbulb collection?:

I also came upon patent 223790 (by accident), it's an 'electric lamp' by F. Winters, Jr.; I had never seen that one and I don't know anything about it. See it here:

Hope you enjoy,

Thanks for linking the picture - probably one of the most famous patents in history!  I've spent countless hours on the USPTO website searching out bulb patents.  It can be very addictive  (http://www.bulbcollector.com/ubb/smile.gif)  I only wish early patents could be searched by topic or inventor.  Unless you have a patent number to go by, it's just about impossible to find anything.

Hi!

I used a little script I made to make my searches easier. It writes a list of links to patents. For example, it can write a link for every patent from 233000 to 234000 (or any range of patents you specify). It helps a lot! You can open each link in a different window and load many patents at once   (http://www.bulbcollector.com/ubb/smile.gif) I redesigned it so anyone could use it. Here it is:
 http://168.37.237.181/otherfiles/earlypatentsearch.html (http://168.37.237.181/otherfiles/earlypatentsearch.html)

Hope it helps!

Cool script!  How about one to search and link design patents?  Here's an example of a design patent, in this case we are looking at D10000:

Thanks!

A design patent search script? Allright, I guess all that is needed is a "D" before the patent number? If so, here's the script:
 http://168.37.237.181/otherfiles/design.html (http://168.37.237.181/otherfiles/design.html)

note: please copy all files downloaded from 168.37.237.181 onto your hard drive if you really want them; That server can be very unreliable sometimes.

If you need any more JS scripts let me know!   (http://www.bulbcollector.com/ubb/smile.gif) (including for your site if you want!) Oh, and I found yet another edison patent! (the one for his platinum lamp):

but the contact between filament and support is other than whichever Edison bulbs from years 1880-1890.

Stan

P.S. Similar flat seals with platinum wire I saw many years ago on Siemens lamps. But you have right, that the screws are the same.
